My Week In Music [23-01-2012]

This week I'm going to add a new way to present the tracks I enjoy every week: I'll divide the list by genre/category. This way you may go straight to the pack you are likely to enjoy the most because I suppose you already have you're tastes sorted out. I decided to do this because last week's list was very long and it looked kind of messy to me to have all those tracks thrown there and expect you to check them all.

I was was planning to release a mid-week, but time ultimately backfired on me, may do that this week.

Here are my favorite tracks from the week of January 23th of 2012.

The tracks are all in alphabetical order and they have audio linked in their names if streaming is available anywhere online. The stream is and official/formal and posted with the allowance of the artist or their label (either by themselves or anyone else). If streaming is not available in this official/formal way a link will take to a "Full Track" that may not be there for long, since there is no sign in that it was posted with the allowance of the artist or their label.

ACTA is more Dangerous than SOPA.

This video despicts a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland which features U.S. Rep. Issa, Wikipedia Founder Jimmy Wales, Google SVP and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond, Scribd Cofounder and CEO Trip Adler, and Mashable CEO Pete Cashmore. It's incredibly informative on topics like: the now deceased SOPA and PIPA and it's international relative ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement), better ways to fight piracy and the fact that content owners (and their representative organizations), tech companies and legislators rely on each other to discuss the solutions to this problem focusing on the user. It's well worth watching in its entirety.

I really liked Adler's remarks that the content and entertainment industry has been highly benefited from Internet distribution services and that piracy has indeed decreased in the past few years as more and more legal services are made available online.

Here's the article from Mashable that caught my attention on this.
Here's also Anonymous-collected  information about ACTA.

Twitter To Censor Tweets.

This particular blog entry from Twitter has come a lot of people's attention where they explain they will start erasing withholding tweets in specific countries by government requests.

In attempt to boost up the sweetness of these bittersweet news, EFF's Jillian York reminds us social media is not above the law (we're talking about local laws) and that they have already responded to DMCA-based requests. I'm interested to see which laws will be used as arguments to locally-censor tweets.

Another stated reason is that geo-blocking tweets will prevent access to citizens from certain countries to content that goes against the moral and cultural values of that region.

Several Twitter users are promoting a #TwitterBlackout to be held tomorrow Saturday, January 28th to protest against these measures.

We'll give Twitter the benefit of the doubt on this one. I'm sure Twitter knows what they are doing, after all "What you say on Twitter may be viewed all around the world instantly. You are what you Tweet!"

Oh, almost forgot, here's my Twitter.

My Week In Music [16-01-2012]

Hello, last week was pretty crazy and full of beauty. Thank God this one started the same way.

I'd like to take this entry to express my infinite joy, because finally, at last, Thanks God ARMIN VAN BUUREN is having a gig in Dominican Republic!

It's on March 23rd and I can't wait 'till the tickets are out. I have to be very cautious of them because according to some "sources" Trance Family DR is huge, also the venue is not that huge and I don't want to be left behind in this one. Many people have been waiting a long time for this to happen and 2012 was the year our begging, screaming and prayer were answered!

The stream is and official/formal and posted with the allowance of the artist or their label (either by themselves or anyone else). If streaming is not available in this official/formal way a link will take to a "Full Track" that may not be there for long, since there is no sign in that it was posted with the allowance of the artist or their label.

Trance 2012

We're just a few days in 2012 and the incoming tracks in the Trance world have been to die for.

Since my 2011 playlist saw the year end with a proudly-collected 170 tunes, I've decided to make a new one for 2012.

As always, I'll keep updating it with all the tracks that I like the most. It already has 60.

Here's to a massive and unforgettable 2012!

"Why SOPA is a bad idea"

Check out this brilliant video where, in a TED feature, Clay Shirky explains in depth why bills like SOPA and
PIPA are dangerous for a society whose basis has become "sharing with one another" and how media companies have always been afraid of this trend and how they want to stop it instead of adapting their business models to it.

You can find Clay on Twitter, Facebook (Community Page) and his blog.

SOPA, PIPA and Media dinosaurs awaiting for their meteor.

This a comment a wrote at Mashable inspired by an article written by Christina Warren.

It's redundant with some parts of the article and the comment itself, but at that moment I felt like I had to say all of this:

“Most people pirate or purchase pirated content because legal access is unavailable or too difficult to decipher.” That sentence is gold!

Also, the geo-blocking of media content should be put to rest. Once I tried to purchase a track on Amazon. It told me I don’t live in the USA.

I myself have downloaded a lot of copyrighted material, just because it’s not available to purchase/stream/etc in my country and I want to enjoy it. But I made a news year resolution about it; there are many streaming websites, so I have access to one of them that contains the material I want to enjoy (music), I will not illegally download that material as long as I can legally enjoy it online. That simple.

I’m 100% sure that everybody would rather have a movie streaming HD on their screens (within a few weeks of theatrical release) for a FEW bucks instead of downloading a poor quality Camera Recording with people standing on the front and NL subtitles. I’m almost certain that the countries that have high statics of copyright infringement it’s not because they want to, it’s because of content availability.

As you said, the entertainment industry just needs to be more clever than the pirates in order to win users and create consciousness that piracy and copyright infringement are wrong, but they won’t get it by imposing us to the model that works best for them.

Also, I bet most people (in countries who have have wide access to numerous distribution services) don’t infringe because they want to harm somebody, they do it because it’s the fastest+easiest way to get what they want.

Why do startups succeed? Because they provide a real solution to a real+common problem, keeping the user satisfied and MAKING IT EASIER for them to do something.

Services like iTunes, Hulu, Netflix, etc should have been MPAA’s and RIAA’s idea, but they just keep on having as their main task protecting the content owner/creator (which is not a bad thing) instead of helping them to easily distribute their material to all audiences (which would be more productive).

I don’t know how this moves legally nor how copyright and licensing works (I know this is to make sure the creator gets paid or gets the credit whenever their content is used), but I think that in addition to provide protection to someone’s material they must make such material’s “purchasability” as user-friendly, easy-going, casual, effortless as if you were downloading it illegally. They have the tools and the money (which is, sadly, mostly used on lobbying)."
